The city of Boise is the third largest metropolitan area in the Pacific Northwest, and according to the 2010 census, over 205,000 people live in this area. Boise is at the eastern head of the Treasure Valley, a river valley created by the Snake River and its tributaries. This lush area is surrounded by miles of hills and high desert terrain. The variety of territory makes it simple for residents of the valley to enjoy diverse recreational activities like hiking, swimming, camping, and other fun things to do.
Homes for sale in Boise and its surrounding communities have access to museums, parks, and other places where one can enjoy interacting with local residents. Some of Idaho’s theaters, in fact, have become famous nationally for their standard of excellence.
The Egyptian Theatre
Lavishly and opulently decorated, the Egyptian Theatre is the oldest theater in the state of Idaho. The style of the theatre -- Egyptian -- became popular after Howard Carter’s discovery of the tomb of the Pharaoh Tutankhamen. By the time this cinema was constructed in 1927, the style had been used all over the nation. However, the Egyptian Theatre in Boise is one of the last examples of this style to still exist. Dilapidated, it was restored to its former glory in 1999.
Now, the Egyptian Theatre in Boise is an integral part of the local community identity. This movie house hosts a large variety of shows, both live shows and feature presentations. Though supposedly-haunted, this single-screen theater is a popular place to visit for any Boise resident when they’re looking to go to the movies.
The Idaho Shakespeare Festival
The Idaho Shakespeare Festival began as a small theater company in the 1970s, headed by Doug Capsey. With the efforts of Capsey and other like-minded artists based in Idaho were able to find a steady supply of work. In 1998, the company was able to fund the construction of the Idaho Shakespeare Festival Amphitheater and Reserve next to the Boise River.
This 770-seat performing arts space is still an impressive outdoor space, where the ISF produces five seasonal plays a year. Actors, technicians, carpenters, and volunteers from all over the country take part in these high-quality shows. The Idaho Shakespeare Habitat Reserve, where the Amphitheater is set, is placed along the Boise River and home to a large variety of plants and animals -- some of which have actually come on stage during performance times.
The ISF is not only a repertory theater; it is also one of Boise’s leading performing arts organizations. Their community outreach program Shakespearience brings Shakespearean performances to schools all over Idaho, and the School of Theater offers classes throughout the year for people of all ages to learn more about the dramatic arts.
The Starlight Mountain Theater
Though not the first outdoor amphitheater in Idaho, the Starlight Mountain Theater group has only grown in popularity since it first opened in 2000. The theater is located on the banks of the Payette River in Garden Valley, Idaho and produces about five different shows a year. These are mostly musicals, including hits like Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Cinderella, Footloose, and Grease.
The Starlight Mountain Theater is known for its high degree of interaction between the audience and the actors. On certain nights, people can pay for a dinner served to them by the main actors, and during the intermission, they will meet with the audience. The theater itself lies in a 17 acre park with room for camping and RVs. This unique combination of entertainment has made the Starlight Mountain Theater one of the most popular theaters in Idaho.
The Village at Meridian is a premier, high-end shopping center found in Meridian, just to the west of Boise. The Village has many attractions including shopping complexes and entertainment centers. The Village Cinema, for example, is a deluxe theater. Not only does it have fifteen screens, the theater comes with reservable seats (including those with DBox Motion, for further immersion in the movie).
The Village at Meridian Cinema also includes a restaurant overlooking the Village, the Backstage Bistro, which was recently named the Best Food at the Village at Meridian. Looking to take in dinner and a show at the same time? The VIP room now offers in-movie dining for an optimal theater experience.
