Idaho is the nation’s best kept secret, rife with beautiful terrain and incredible housing opportunities. Whether you are looking for a home within a dense wilderness, a concrete jungle, or somewhere in between, Idaho has just the property for you. Search houses in Idaho to find a home in the right location.
Idaho is the seventh least-densely populated state in the United States, but that isn’t too surprising. Over sixty percent of Idaho’s lands are property of the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management, used for national parks and wildlife preserves, among other things. The other forty percent of state land is divided amongst cities and towns of all shapes and sizes. In fact, our smallest town, Warm River, only has three people!
The largest city, on the other hand, is Boise -- Idaho’s capital city. Over 205,000 people call this city home. Boise is a French word for “wooded area,” inspiring the city’s nickname. “The City of Trees,” as it is sometimes known, takes its name to heart, and has treelined streets throughout its business districts and residential areas. As the proverbial head of the Treasure Valley, this community is one of the most popular in Idaho.
The Treasure Valley, which shares much of its space with the Boise Metropolitan statistical area, is a valley surrounded by high desert, which is fed by the Snake River and its tributaries. This region extends from Boise all the way to Vale, Oregon, and is easily identifiable on a map by its lush, green color. This is also the highest-populated area in Idaho - about forty percent of Idaho’s population lives here.
Additional Treasure Valley Communities
This largely suburban area rests just ten miles to the northeast of Boise. Members of this community can commute back and forth easily between their home and Boise businesses. Eagle is also where popular landmarks like Eagle Island State Park or the Eagle Sports Complex are located. Neighborhoods in this city are typically comprised of single family units with excellent curb appeal.
Nampa is one of the fastest growing communities in the state, and it is the second most populated city in Idaho. This city was a traditional rural area that is developing into a metropolis from the inside out. Still, Nampa embraces its roots with events like the Snake River Stampede, a nationally recognized rodeo. Homes in Nampa can be found in either urban neighborhoods or more rural territory.
Meridian is just to the west of Boise and shares many perks and space with its neighbor. Meridian’s central location makes it a very popular choice for people who want to experience the Treasure Valley. This former dairy town has lots of incredible houses for sale, as well as gyms, entertainment centers, outdoor areas, and businesses like The Village at Meridian (a Euro-shopping center). Meridian subdivisions are very similar to Boise’s yet provide more distance from the bustle of the city.
Kuna is considered a more rural town in the Treasure Valley, but has grown into a highly livable city home to over 15,000 people (2010 census). Kuna is about 25 miles southwest of Boise. It hosts various community events throughout the year attended by people all over the valley. For example, Kuna holds the annual Snake River Birds of Prey Festival, headed by the Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area, a 600,000 acre facility meant for the conservation of these birds. Like Nampa, you can find homes in urban neighborhoods in Kuna, as well as more rural properties.
Idaho is well known for its outdoor spaces, like the Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey NCA. Many of these scenic areas are open for visitors nearly year round and are excellent locations to hike, bike, camp, or otherwise enjoy.
The Boise Foothills, which are to the North and Northeast of their namesake, are rugged hills that are a picturesque backdrop to life in the Treasure Valley. Houses built in these Idaho hills are generally larger than the typical valley home and have large lots of land. However, these hills are also lined with trails for hiking and biking, as well as for those riding on horseback or ATVS. Favored places to hike include Camel’s Back Park and the Table Rock plateau.
The Boise River, which runs through a large portion of the Treasure Valley before emptying into the Snake River, is one of Idaho’s most popular waterways. During the summer months, people from all over Idaho come to the Boise to float along its banks or fish for the challenging trout that live there.
No matter who you are, Idaho communities have houses for sale that could be perfect for you. Start searching for an Idaho home today and enjoy the properties available.
