Though there are many different styles of homes in Idaho, knowing some of the styles will give you a taste for Idaho culture and styles.

A log home is common in the mountains as a getaway or a vacation home. When the log home first became popular, it was simply used for practical purposes, as it was fast and easy to construct. Today, a log home is a more luxurious home, normally somewhere rural. Log cabins are easy to decorate and turn into a cozy home.

The Craftsman style, rightly called, was from the arts and crafts movement. A Craftsman home will have emphasis placed on how the materials used are used effectively and efficiently. Customarily, materials that go into the making of a Craftsman home will be natural elements such as wood, stone, or brick. The interior design will have an open floor plan with exposed beams. The exterior of the home will exemplify the spacious inside with a wide porch and low-pitched roof.

A Contemporary styled home will in some way connect the exterior of the home with the interior. This may include expansive windows. Perhaps, there will be a skylight or two to emphasize the connection to the outdoors. With this emphasis to look towards the outdoors, frequently a Contemporary home will be more energy efficient and be made from recycled and sustainable materials.

A Mid-Century Modern home was popular from 1945 to the mid 1980s. Though the style is not prominent as of recent years, some mid-century modern homes are still present. Mostly, this style is not seen as a home itself but many of the elements are reflected in homes that are being built today. Elements that are common in a mid-century modern home include large glass windows and an emphasis on open space in the interior and exterior of the home.

A Modern styled home has a focus on the architecture with a generally symmetrical layout and geometric lines in the design. When building a Modern styled home, the building plans will use function over form, making the most practical use of space. At the same time, there will generally be more open space in the main living area and the space seemingly larger with expansive windows.

The Townhouse is perhaps the most practical of the homes styles. It will utilize space and materials to the maximum efficiency level with a home. This style becomes popular in a city that is growing quickly. The layout of a Townhouse is very efficient and will generally have a row house design with multiple stories, smaller hallways, and limited lawn space. This is efficient because it will share a wall with a neighboring house.

River rafting is another favored sport. With thousands of miles of rivers, over 93,000 miles. Out of these miles of river, 3,100 miles have whitewater rapids so that rafting can be convenient for a day activity or longer. For more exhilarating trips, Class difficulty  V rapids can be found in the North Fork of the Payette River or the South Fork of the Salmon River. For a more relaxing float down water, the Boise River and Snake River is a favorite.

Other outdoor endeavors in Idaho include hiking, nearby trails or in the mountains, camping, fishing, boating, four-wheeling, geocaching, to name a few. Depending on where you live will determine where you go for these activities. If you live in Boise, for example, an exceptional place to camp is one of the numerous campgrounds in the Boise National Forest. No matter where you live in Idaho, however, spending time in nature isn’t too far away.

Shopping in Idaho

Along with getting into nature, many Idahoans enjoy the urban lifestyle. In the capital city, there are several shopping centers, including the popular Boise Towne Square Mall. Established in 1988, the Boise mall quickly became the largest mall in the Boise Metropolitan area. The second largest mall in this area is the Karcher Mall in Nampa, Idaho. Another fashionable shopping center is the Meridian Village, a chic outdoor gathering place with modern stores and entertainment locations.

Outside of the Treasure Valley, popular malls include Pine Ridge Mall in Pocatello, Idaho, Grand Teton Mall in Idaho Falls, Lewiston Center Mall, and Palouse Mall. Besides those aforementioned, there are many other malls in the state of Idaho.
