Idaho is booming with businesses both big and small, but some of the largest companies in Idaho have given the state a reputation of success and economical promise. Founded in 1978, Micron has become one of the leading corporations of the semiconductor industry in the entire world. Micron collaborates with engineers to create new innovations in the world of technology. Micron has locations in over twenty countries, employs over 30,000 people across the globe, and is at the top of the industry in technology for its product portfolio. In 2015, Micron was ranked #1 on a list of the top 50 electric employers by Electric Designs. Their headquarters is in Boise and is one of the largest employers in all of Idaho.
This food chain is all over the country, but it is based out of Idaho. In fact, it is the second largest supermarket chain in all of North America. Founded in 1939 in Boise, Albertson’s (at that time with an apostrophe) was a new type of supermarket in Idaho, providing free parking and an ice cream shop as well as money-back guarantees. Throughout the years, Albertsons became what it is today, and partnering with Skaggs after a few decades greatly helped the company as well. Now, the company has over 250,000 employees and 2200 stores.
Regional Medical Centers: St. Alphonsus and St. Luke’s
Two of the largest employers in Idaho are the regional hospitals, St. Alphonsus Hospital and St. Luke’s Hospital. St. Alphonsus employs close to a thousand medical staff members in Idaho and has over 4,300 associates throughout the state. The Level II Trauma Center is one of the main reasons this center employs so many and why this hospital is so big in the state, but they also have excellence in other areas, such as oncology and orthopedics.
As for St. Luke’s, this hospital is one of the finest in the state and employs over 13,500 people throughout the state, making it a much larger employer than St. Alphonsus. St. Luke’s is also the only not-for-profit health center in all of Idaho that is Idaho-based. There are more than 1800 physicians at St. Luke’s hospital, and they provide some of the greatest medical care in the country.
J.R. Simplot Company
The J.R. Simplot Company’s was founded in South Central Idaho in 1929 and is one of the biggest privately owned businesses in the world. The company has helped in numerous causes and even had a hand in helping soldiers during World War II, where the company helped feed the soldiers dehydrated potatoes and onions. The 1950s is when the company really boomed, as one of its scientists created frozen French fries, causing the company to get billions of dollars. It is now an enormous company with its headquarters located in the state’s capitol of Boise.
Idaho power is one of the country’s only investor-owned utilities with a generating base that is chiefly hydroelectric. Idaho Power owns three coal-fired generating plants (with other companies), has two gas-fired plants, and has 17 hydroelectric power plants. The company was originally founded in 1915 and was to be a utility in Maine, but the company set up shop in Idaho in 1989. They employ two thousand workers in the state of Idaho and is one of the most successful employers in the state.
Melaleuca, Inc. is a wellness company worth $887 million. It was founded in 1985 and is headquartered in Idaho Falls and is used all across the globe. The company sells nutritional supplements and items for healthcare needs; they have sales offices throughout the entire world, including in countries such as New Zealand, Australia, Japan, China, Jamaica, and Singapore. They make it their mission to remove toxic chemicals from the home and out of the hands of people across the globe. Although Based in California and not Idaho, Hewlett-Packard is one of the largest employers in the state of Idaho. The company was founded in 1939 and has almost 50,000 employees. It is an information technology company that is multi-national in 2016 alone, the company made over $48 billion.
