4 light maximizing life hacks “light-hacks” for your homeLife hacks are tips and tricks to make people’s lives easier. The internet is full of them, and most of the time you don’t always get what you want. Well, today we are promising you nothing but our best life hacks when it comes to the subject of lighting your homes. In fact, you may even call them “light” hacks.

Maximizing the light your home is more than just something you do on a whim. In fact, if you are a homeowner, you will want to do all you can to make your home seem brighter. A bright home will look more attractive, be more useful, and leave you and your guests feeling warm and safe. But if your home is not as bright as you would like, what are you supposed to do? Do you need to call an electrician to wire up a few more lights? Well, you’ll be glad to know that you won’t have to do that. In fact, there are quite a few inexpensive ways to brighten your home without having to do any wiring at all!

Life Hack #1: install brighter lightbulbs

The light bulb industry has changed drastically over the last few years ushering in a new generation of light bulbs and some of them are pretty incredible. But, why do you need to worry about the type of light bulbs that you use in your home? Well, the quality and type actually have just as much an influence over how bright your home seems. This actually makes quite a bit of difference. If you have a bad set of bulbs your home can instantly seem dingy and dark. However, the good news is that there are literally endless light bulbs to choose from. So, take a walk down the lighting aisle of your local hardware store and talk with the helpful folks that work there. They will help you find the best light bulbs for your situation.

One of the great things about buying new lightbulbs now is the fact that they are usually more efficient and long lasting. They may cost more on the outset, but they will quickly save your wallet some discomfort. Not to mention they are better for the earth thanks to their efficiency like we mentioned. So it saves you some green and keeps the earth green as well.

There is also some great WIFI enabled lightbulbs you can get now that allow you to control your lights from your phone. Imagine that! Now you don’t have to get up or use one of those noisy clap activated devices.

Life Hack #2: Mirror Magic

If you have ever seen those old archeological adventure films like the Mummy, you have probably seen a scene where a character uses a set of mirrors to light a cavern or underground room. While it is a bit dramatized in film, this concept actually has some merit for those looking to increase the brightness of their room. While the light isn’t being increased, it is being bounced around the room in all sorts of directions. The Mythbusters did a test on this in one of their episodes, you should check it out.

An awesome thing about using mirrors to brighten up your room is the fact that they don’t cost as much as other options. You see, if you go to a discount store, a thrift store, a dollar store, or even online you could find yourself a few mirrors that would do the trick no problem for a decent price. So, this is definitely not one that is going to break the bank.

What you will want to do once you have the mirrors though is to put them on the walls that are directly across from your windows or other light sources. This will give them the best chance of catching the light. Then you will want to tilt them up to the ceiling or down toward the floor— not too much, though, you only want to tilt them about 5 degrees. This will make it so the light doesn’t just bounce out of the room but rather gets scattered elsewhere in the room.

Life Hack #3: Repaint!

If you don’t want to hang any mirrors or have hung some and don’t find it useful, you can always try repainting. Repainting your room a lighter color will do a lot for its brightness. This works because the lighter colors are more, for lack of a better term, ‘reflective’ than darker ones. We don’t really have time to go into the science of it all, but for time sake— they are more reflective.

So, when you do this you are essentially making your wall a gigantic dull mirror that diffuses the light in all directions. This means that you still won’t be creating any more light in your room, but you will be getting more out of your light.

Repainting is great for the do-it-yourselfer. It is a hands-on project that should only take a few days to complete and will have great effects on the room. So, head on down to the hardware store and talk with the friendly people at the paint counter for some help picking out paint. They will have a good idea of the best paint for brightening up your room.

Life Hack #4: Thin curtains

This is a really good idea for those who value the privacy that curtains bring but still want to get some light into their room. Thin curtains whether they be lace or just really thin and opaque can do great things for privacy and allow for a little light to come in.

This is not necessarily the most inexpensive option out there but it is simpler than most. And, if you still want to be able to shut the world out you can install a nice set of black-out curtains as well, so you can choose depending on your preference for the day.
