This area of the state is largely covered by the Snake River Tributary Basin, which is known for its fertile soil.

POPULAR EVENTS IN IDAHO

Living on land in Idaho can connect you with the culture and the community that is integrated into an Idaho life. Many events in Idaho are annual traditions that bring Idaho closer together as a community.

Western Idaho Fair

Dating back to 1897, the Western Idaho Fair has become a tradition favored among Idahoans. It was started in order to connect Boise with other cities that were over 300 miles apart. This fair brought together Idaho’s major departments including livestock, agriculture, and domestic manufacturing. The fair also focused on Idaho’s natural resources such as fruit, silver and gold. The Western Idaho Fair has continued to grow for more than a century. Though the fair has shifted in directions, it still remains a gathering place for people across Idaho. Today, the Western Idaho Fair has 4-H events, rides, shows and food galore. Open for two weeks in August every year, the fair will continue to be a part of Idaho.

Snake River Stampede

The Snake River Stampede started as a simple harvest festival in 1911 in the small town of Nampa, Idaho. Over the years, the small rodeo show at the festival grew into a popular competition and eventually split off to become its own event in 1937. That same year, the rodeo changed from an afternoon event to a night show to gear to a different audience. Also that year the rodeo joined the Rodeo Cowboys Association and thus became a professional rodeo. As the show grew, so did the stadium. As the years passed, there have been country singers and western stars to add to the event. In the 1990's the Miss Rodeo Idaho contest was formed and continues to occur to the present day. Today, the Snake River Stampede is one of the top 10 regular professional rodeos in the United States.

Caldwell Night Rodeo

Organized in 1935 as part of the festivities to commemorate the beginning of irrigation in Boise, the Caldwell Night Rodeo quickly grew to become an integral part of Caldwell’s tradition and culture. The first Caldwell Night Rodeo was attended by thousands and the competition was intense with a $2,500 reward. Growing in popularity, many enjoyed the rodeo. The rodeo was struck with disaster, however, when they moved stadiums and people felt like the tradition had been lost. To add to the downfall, the next year many of the competitors got injured due to the arena being slick because of rain. The following years the rodeo was slowly built up and finally became one of the top 20 professional rodeos in the United States. Every year, over 40,000 people visit the rodeo over five nights. It once again became a well loved tradition.
